With the transfer of the Irish Folklore Commission to University College Dublin, Comhairle Bhéaloideas Éireann was established in 1972 by the Department of Education, tasked with assisting and overseeing the continuation of the work of the Commission particularly with regard to indexing, archiving and publication.
These functions allow for representation of the public interest especially in facilitating public access to the Collection. From 1972 until 1994 An Chomhairle fulfilled these functions most notably in the successful establishment of the series Folklore Studies in which a range of books and audio publications has been made available.
An Chomhairle also instituted a number of indexing and fieldwork initiatives. In 2005-2006 the National Folklore Collection was established as a separate cost centre in University College Dublin within the School of Irish, Celtic Studies, Irish Folklore and Linguistics. Comhairle Bhéaloideas Éireann was re-activated at this point. Comhairle Bhéaloideas Éireann continues to engage with the work undertaken in support of the National Folklore Collection.
The National Folklore Collection is one of the richest collections of its kind in the world and constitutes a unique resource for the study of Irish traditional culture.
